WOMEN in Kedah have been urged not to withdraw police reports in cases of spousal abuse or incest to ensure perpetrators are held accountable and victims’ safety is prioritised.
Datuk Halimaton Shaadiah Saad, chairperson of the state’s Committee for Welfare, Women, Family, Society, and Unity, said many victims remain hesitant to pursue action despite experiencing abuse, often due to feelings of shame, fear, or misplaced sympathy for the offender.
“Some women feel embarrassed, afraid, or too sympathetic. When cases reach court and the husband is in the dock, they withdraw because they worry about who will care for their children or themselves.
“This is a challenge faced by many women in Kedah,” she said, emphasising that support from both the community and relevant agencies is crucial.
“We have government agencies and NGOs that can assist. In cases of incest or sexual violence, do not stay silent. Report to the authorities so we can help resolve these issues.”
Halimaton made the remarks after officiating the Orange the World campaign at Menara Alor Setar yesterday.
Also present was the Mayor of Alor Setar, Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya. Participants took part in a three-kilometre walk through the city centre before the tower was illuminated in orange, symbolising hope for a safer future free from violence against women and girls.
She highlighted a worrying rise in gender-based and sexual violence in Kedah, reflecting national trends.
“National data shows a concerning situation. In 2024, authorities recorded 7,116 domestic violence cases nationwide, up from 5,507 cases in 2023. From January to June 2025, 3,768 cases were reported, 73 per cent involving women,” she said.
Halimaton added that sexual assault reports are also increasing, with 1,899 rape cases reported in 2024, while sexual harassment cases rose from 522 in 2023 to 788 in 2024. “These figures only represent reported cases.
Many victims remain silent due to fear, shame, or lack of awareness about available support. The actual number of victims is expected to be much higher,” she said, underscoring the urgent need for public awareness and accessible assistance channels. - December 6, 2025
