THE long-delayed recovery of the KLIA Aerotrain is set to move into a new phase this month, with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) confirming that the system will begin trial operations as part of a comprehensive plan to restore its reliability.

The trials form a critical stage of a month-long action plan launched on 15 November, following a series of breakdowns that have continued to affect the service since its relaunch earlier this year.

Despite undergoing a RM456 million upgrade and being suspended for two years, the Aerotrain, which links the main terminal to the satellite building at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, recorded 19 service disruptions between July and September.

Malaysia Airports had previously said the problems stemmed from integration issues between the new train sets and ageing infrastructure, as well as power trips and signalling faults.

In an update issued today, the airport operator confirmed that the first two phases of the recovery plan, covering detailed inspections, rectification works and simulation testing, have now been completed.

The system will now progress to Stage Three, involving trial operations under a range of real-world operating conditions. These tests are scheduled to continue until the end of December.

Malaysia Airports said the entire process is being independently reviewed by two external assessors as part of efforts to ensure transparency and restore public confidence in the system. The assessors’ final reports are expected by mid-January 2026.

In the interim, the operator confirmed that the Aerotrain will continue operating during daytime hours. Nightly shutdowns from 9pm to 7am, which were previously announced, will remain in place, with shuttle bus services continuing to ferry passengers between the main terminal and the satellite building during those hours. - December 16, 2025
