THE Selangor government has confirmed that the prohibition on bringing pets into shopping malls remains in force, even as officials reassess current guidelines to ensure social harmony in a multicultural society.
State Local Government and Tourism Executive Councillor Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the policy is still effective, but the state is open to examining international standards and practices, particularly in developed countries where pet-friendly public spaces are common.
“We in Selangor, as a progressive state with international standing, try to examine all measures related to international policies. In certain countries, they are indeed pet-friendly, allowing animals to be brought here and there, including into shopping malls and similar places.
“However, based on our diverse culture and multiracial society, we need to carefully consider whether all those measures can be adopted or are suitable to be applied everywhere, including in shopping malls and so on,” he said.
Ng was speaking to reporters after taking part in the Op Terjah Public Cleansing operation in Section 7 on Wednesday, an event also attended by KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir.
His remarks came in response to recent action by a shopping mall in the Klang Valley that allowed visitors to bring their pets into the premises, sparking public discussion over the suitability of such practices in Selangor. - December 18, 2025
