THE Magistrate’s Court in Kuala Lumpur today discharged and acquitted Malaysian rapper Wee Meng Chee, popularly known as Namewee, from charges of introducing drugs into his body.
Magistrate S Arunjothy ruled in favour of Namewee after Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa informed the court that the pathology results were negative and the prosecution was withdrawing the charge. The court also ordered that Namewee’s RM2,000 bail be returned.
Prior to the ruling, Namewee’s lawyer, Joshua Tay, argued that the negative pathology report justified the dismissal of the case, and the court agreed.
Namewee had been accused of ingesting drugs in the toilet of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division at Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters at 7.15pm on October 22 under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The charge carries a maximum penalty of RM5,000 in fines or two years’ imprisonment, alongside supervision of two to three years.
However, Namewee remains charged with possession of 5.12 grams of suspected ecstasy at a hotel room on Jalan Conlay on the same day under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If convicted, he faces two to five years in prison and a minimum of three lashes, with a maximum of nine.
The court’s decision to acquit Namewee of the ingestion charge marks a partial legal reprieve, while the prosecution’s possession case continues, maintaining significant public and media attention on the high-profile entertainer. - December 22, 2025
