PAS has called on UMNO members and supporters to revive the spirit of Muafakat Nasional as a foundation for Muslim unity ahead of Malaysia’s 16th General Election, arguing that cooperation between the two parties remains vital for political stability, particularly at grassroots level.
The PAS Central Election Director, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, said the party remained open to support from UMNO members who wished to back PAS, even if they continued to be organised within UMNO.
“We invite our friends in UMNO. We welcome UMNO members who want to be with us in PAS.
“Even if they remain in UMNO, organised under UMNO and led by UMNO leaders, we believe that UMNO members in Sik in particular are aware and intelligent enough to know who to vote for.
“In the coming GE16, I am confident they will be with PAS,” he said in a Facebook post on the Kedah PAS liaison page on Sunday.
Sanusi, who is also the Sik PAS division chief and Kedah Perikatan Nasional chairman, said the cordial relationship previously shared between PAS and UMNO members should be maintained in a spirit of mutual respect.
He said the experience during the Muafakat Nasional period had shown that party differences did not prevent unity at community level.
“During the MN days, at UMNO weddings, PAS members were the first to arrive, even though the event was an UMNO function,” he said.
Sanusi added that unity among Muslims must continue to be strengthened as they shared the same foundations.
“We live in the same village, like siblings. We hope this spirit will endure because we all share the same faith, the same direction of prayer and the same community.
“We will stand with Islam until the end of our lives, whether in daily life or in politics, administration and the governance of the country,” he said.
In the same remarks, Sanusi, who is also Kedah PAS deputy commissioner I, stressed that PAS does not practise selective treatment in political cooperation.
“We do not discriminate. We extend the same fair treatment to all parties,” he said.
He also called on PAS members to intensify their efforts ahead of the next general election.
“I urge all PAS members to continue working hard to secure victory in GE16,” he said.
Earlier, UMNO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh had suggested reviving Muafakat Nasional, which previously saw political cooperation between UMNO and PAS.
The Melaka executive councillor made the suggestion following political developments in Perlis, where eight state assembly members were reported to have submitted statutory declarations to the palace indicating a loss of confidence in the leadership of Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli of PAS, a situation that could trigger by-elections in three seats.
Following that, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari also agreed with the proposal to revive Muafakat Nasional, describing it in a Facebook post as a resurgence of Muslim unity. - December 28, 2025
