AUTHORITIES are investigating a fraudulent social media post that used the logo and branding of Buletin TV3 to spread false information suggesting that the Communications Minister had announced the closure of TikTok Malaysia.
Initial inquiries by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have confirmed that the content was deliberately altered and entirely fabricated. The purported statement from the Communications Minister was never issued.
Media Prima Berhad, the parent company of TV3, has also lodged a police report, denying any connection to the post.
The company emphasised that none of its news platforms published the content and described the misuse of TV3’s logo and visual identity as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
As a result, MCMC has opened a formal investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588]. A suspect has been summoned to assist with the inquiry, and their statement has been recorded at the Kerian District Police Headquarters in Perak. Authorities have also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card for digital forensic analysis.
Section 233 of Act 588 provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
Authorities have reminded the public to verify the authenticity of any information before uploading, sharing, or commenting on social media.
The dissemination of false content and misuse of official identities not only misleads the public but also carries legal consequences. - December 30, 2025
