A CLINIC clerk in Kuala Terengganu lost more than RM70,000 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate that used a fake online job offer, beginning with the delivery of an unsolicited parcel to her home.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said a report was lodged at about 2pm on Monday.
He said the 54-year-old woman claimed the incident began on January 1, when she received a parcel containing items branded as Tupperware from an unknown individual while at her residence in Bukit Besar.
“Not long after that, the complainant was contacted via a phone call before being added into a WhatsApp messaging group with around 200 members,” he said when contacted on Tuesday.
“In the group, the complainant was offered simple tasks such as pressing ‘like’ and sharing social media posts, with promises of commission payments,” he added.
Azli said after completing about 20 tasks and receiving initial commissions, the victim was persuaded that she could earn higher income by making payments to upgrade her status to that of a worker.
“At that point, the victim was unaware that she was being deceived. She made two online money transfers and 15 cash deposit transactions into five different bank accounts,” he said.
“The total amount transferred reached RM70,935, involving five different bank accounts, using the complainant’s personal savings,” he added.
According to Azli, the woman began to suspect something was wrong when she was repeatedly asked to make additional payments without receiving the promised profits.
“The victim, who felt she had been cheated, then came forward to the police station to lodge a report.
“This case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and further investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Azli also advised the public not to be easily deceived by random parcel deliveries or job offers that promise lucrative returns.
He said people should immediately verify with the authorities before carrying out any transactions that appear suspicious. - January 13, 2026
