ACADEMIC and political commentator Murray Victor Hunter publicly apologised and retracted all comments and articles about the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
"MCMC and I have discussed and reached an understanding via a Settlement Agreement. "I acknowledge that my comments and article about MCMC and its related persons can be read to be inaccurate, misleading and have led to misunderstandings," he said in a statement.
He also apologised and expressed regret if such actions caused any damage to MCMC or related persons.
He also attached a list of the said comments and articles under the Settlement Agreement published between April and November 2024.
In October last year, the Shah Alam High Court found Hunter liable for defamation in a civil suit brought by the MCMC.
The court ruled on 15 October 2025 that a series of articles authored by Hunter between April and November 2024 contained false and defamatory statements which seriously damaged the reputation of the MCMC.
The publications were found to include baseless allegations that misled the public and undermined confidence in the Commission, prompting the regulator to pursue legal action.
In a statement, the MCMC had said the verdict affirms the principle that freedom of speech, while fundamental, must be exercised responsibly. – January 13, 2026
