A 43-YEAR-OLD mechanic was shot at least three times at a car workshop in Jalan Sungai Lembu in Bukit Mertajam on Thursday before he fled about 50 metres and jumped over a fence to escape two gunmen.

The incident occurred at about 1.45pm when the victim was approached by two men riding a motorcycle, who opened fire at him.

The victim suffered an injury to his right palm and later lodged a police report at Kulim Police Station in Kedah before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

He reportedly ran from the workshop and jumped over a fence opposite a Chinese cemetery to evade the attackers.

Police are investigating the motive for the shooting and said the victim was believed to have a previous criminal record.

Police and forensic personnel recovered bullets and spent cartridge cases at the scene.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng confirmed the incident when contacted.

“We are working to track down the suspect,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. - September 4, 2026
