ALL security agencies and relevant government departments in Sabah have been mobilised to conduct evacuations, rescue operations, and the distribution of aid to residents affected by severe flooding in the northern districts and Sandakan.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the state government is closely monitoring the situation to ensure assistance reaches the affected populations in Kota Marudu, Pitas, Paitan, and Sandakan promptly and efficiently.
He expressed sympathy for the flood victims, describing the disaster as a test, particularly for Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan.
“Amid the blessings of Ramadan, some of our fellow citizens are being tested by the calamity of floods. I extend my deepest sympathies to all those affected. The safety of our people remains the state government’s utmost priority,” Hajiji said in a Facebook statement today.
The Chief Minister also urged residents in the flood-affected areas and surrounding regions to remain vigilant, comply with authorities’ instructions, prioritise the safety of themselves and their families, and avoid taking any unnecessary risks.
“During this sacred month of Ramadan, let us pray for one another and extend assistance according to our capacity. May Allah grant strength, resilience, and protection to all who are being tested,” he added.
The districts of Kota Marudu, Pitas, and Paitan were declared flood disaster areas at 6am today, while parts of Sandakan have also been affected following continuous rainfall since yesterday.
As of midday, a total of 336 flood victims from 111 families have been relocated to five temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Kota Marudu and Pitas. Kota Marudu recorded the highest number of evacuees, with 274 individuals from 83 families moved from five affected villages to PPS at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tandek 2.
In Pitas, 62 victims from 28 families have been transferred to four PPS in the district, including Sekolah Kebangsaan Rukom, the Pitas District Council Hall, Dewan Kusilad, and Dewan Kabatasan. Reports indicate that 19 villages in Pitas have been affected by the floods to date.
The state government continues to coordinate relief efforts, prioritising safety, shelter, and essential support for displaced families. - February 20, 2026
