JOHOR BARU – Two temporary evacuation centres have been opened here to accommodate 314 flood victims from 70 families after several areas were hit by flash floods following more than eight hours of heavy rain that started yesterday morning.

The two centres are at Sekolah Agama Kg Cahaya Baru in Masai and SK Batu 10 in Skudai.

Pasir Gudang fire station operations commander Ibrahim Omar said 226 victims from Kg Sentosa Damai were moved to Sekolah Agama Kg Cahaya Baru after the village was inundated with floodwaters up to 3m high.

“A distress call was received at 4.07pm.  We evacuated 48 families, and the rescue operation ended at 9.31pm,” he said in a statement last night.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman R. Vidyananthan, in a statement, said 88 victims from 22 families from Kg Laut Batu 10 were evacuated to SK Batu 10 at 2pm.

“Among the affected areas are Kg Pasir, Kg Teluk Serdang Baru and Kg Laut Batu 10 in Skudai, and Kg Sentosa Damai in Pasir Gudang,” he said, adding that the high tide also contributed to the flooding. – Bernama, January 2, 2021
