THREE days after rejecting the work-from-home (WFH) concept in Penang, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow now said the state will study the guidelines as the federal government is going ahead with it.

The WFH concept is said to be necessitated following a combination of external challenges - the heatwave, spiking global oil prices and the increasing congestion in some urbanised areas.

Chow said that the state will also have its own guidelines for WFH, which are mostly catered to clerical staffers within the state civil service machinery.

"The Federal side has disclosed its guidelines after a meeting between the Prime Minister and chief ministers as well as Mentris Besar," said Chow.

Chow said that he would liaise with the state secretary on the additional guidelines the state may impose, besides the ones regulated by the federal side.

He said this after officiating at the land-breaking ceremony for the solar farming at the Byram Estate in Nibong Tebal.

Chow said that the state will study whether there are needs for additional guidelines to supplement the approach by the federal government.

Last Wednesday, Chow had dismissed the WFH concept because it is not needed in Penang. – April 4, 2026
