A 23-YEAR-OLD woman has been fined RM300,000, or faces 24 months’ imprisonment in default, after being convicted of operating an unlicensed dental service providing braces treatment in Kuantan.
Intan Nazirah Mohd Rofi was sentenced by Judge Maimoonah Aid at the Sessions Court, after being found guilty of carrying out dental procedures at premises not registered with the Ministry of Health.
She faced two charges, including practising dentistry without proper registration under the Dental Act 2018, as well as operating an unregistered private dental clinic in violation of the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998.
Under the law, each offence carries a potential penalty of up to RM150,000, imprisonment of up to six years, or both.
The case was prosecuted by enforcement officers from the Ministry of Health.
According to the case facts, a team from the Private Medical Practice Control Section and the Dental Enforcement Unit of the Pahang State Health Department raided a premises in Kampung Pak Mahat at around 9pm on 14 September 2022, acting on information about illegal dental activities.
During the raid, the accused was found performing braces treatment on a patient, who was lying on a mattress in the living room of the premises, which had been converted into an improvised clinic.
She failed to produce any valid certification, including registration of the premises as a private dental clinic, proof of registration with the Malaysian Dental Council, or a valid annual practising certificate.
Authorities seized various dental tools and materials used for orthodontic procedures.
The case follows a similar ruling earlier in the week, in which another woman was fined RM100,000 by the Sessions Court in Petaling Jaya for operating an illegal braces service, highlighting growing enforcement against unlicensed dental practices in Malaysia. - April 6, 2026
