A POLICE officer with schizophrenia was arrested yesterday after being chased around the capital.

The 40-year-old inspector, who is currently on sick leave pending retirement due to health reasons, was arrested in the Chan Sow Lin area after a chase that started from Jalan Cheras.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said authorities were chasing the suspect after he was believed to have hit a traffic policeman from behind on Friday night at Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra.

"The driver fled without rendering aid. The traffic policeman was injured in the head, right palm and ribs and is receiving treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital," he said as reported by Berita Harian.

According to him, the police tracked down the suspect's vehicle yesterday evening.

When chased, the suspect drove dangerously and crashed into several vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz, a Proton Saga and a police patrol car.

Traffic officers also controlled traffic to reduce the risk to the public throughout the operation.

The suspect, who is undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, was eventually arrested. A breath test found that he was negative for alcohol, while the results of a urine test had not yet been obtained.

Fadil said the case was being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, which provides for imprisonment and fines.

"So far, seven police reports have been received involving five public vehicles, a police MPV and a motorcycle," he said.

A video recording of the incident also went viral on social media.

Members of the public with information are asked to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Muhammad Razif Jamaluddin, at 019-4482852 or the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police Hotline at 03-2026 0267. – April 14, 2026
