THE Director-General of the Malaysian Department of Survey and Mapping (JUPEM), Datuk Hazri Hassan, was charged at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today with two counts of allegedly abusing his position to obtain gratification involving more than RM130,000 in funds belonging to the Malaysian Board of Surveyors (LJT).
Hazri pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him through a court interpreter before Judge Suzana Hussin.
“I understand, I plead not guilty,” he said.
On the first charge, Hazri in his capacity as Director-General of the department and LJT Chairman, is accused of using his position for gratification involving LJT funds amounting to RM30,201.16 and RM105,914 for his own benefit.
The alleged act was said to have taken place during an LJT board meeting that discussed his participation in the 14th Session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management in New York, United States, held from 4 to 9 August 2024.
For the second charge, Hazri is accused of similarly using his position during another LJT board meeting involving discussions on his participation in international engagements, including meetings with Professor Dr Shaikh Mohamed Zaffar Sadiq Mohamed Ghouse, Vice President and Director of Advisory & Innovation at Woolpert, as well as the Fifth Plenary Meeting of the High-Level Group for Integrated Geospatial Information Framework and related bureau meetings.
That alleged involvement relates to meetings held in Madinah and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 29 January and 4 February 2025.
Both offences are said to have been committed at the LJT Board Meeting Room, Level 7, Wisma LJT, Lorong Perak, Melawati City Centre in Kuala Lumpur, on 3 August 2024, and at Park View 2, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on 31 December 2024.
The charges were framed under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which provides for punishment under Section 24(1) of the same Act.
If convicted, Hazri faces a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the gratification involved, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
