A ROUTINE morning at a hospital café in Pantai Hospital Ipoh was abruptly thrown into chaos when a woman began choking on her food, struggling to breathe as panic spread among those nearby.

What followed, however, was a swift and decisive response that turned a frightening moment into one of relief.

According to a social media post by the hospital, an off-duty nurse, identified as Siti Maisyura, had just wrapped up her night shift and was waiting for her child’s follow-up appointment near the café when the incident unfolded.

As the woman choked, family members scrambled for help, with every passing second becoming increasingly critical.

Without hesitation, Maisyura stepped in.

Drawing on her training and instincts, she calmly performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on the victim.

Within moments, the obstruction was dislodged, allowing the woman to breathe again.

In recounting the incident, the hospital said Maisyura’s response went beyond professional duty.

“In that tense moment, she was not just a nurse — she was a lifesaver,” it said, adding that her actions embodied the spirit of International Nurses Day 2026, themed “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives”.

The incident has since drawn praise online, with many commending her quick thinking and selflessness.

Several users noted how she rushed to help without a second thought, leaving behind her belongings, while others offered prayers and well-wishes for her.

For a brief moment inside that café, instinct, training and courage made all the difference. – May 14, 2026
