A 41-YEAR-OLD man has been brought before the Sessions Court in Butterworth over allegations that he severely injured his acquaintance in a parang attack that left the victim at risk of permanent disability.
J Tanabalan was charged before Judge Ooi Sheow Yean under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, an offence which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment, as well as liability for fine or whipping upon conviction.
He is accused of intentionally causing grievous injury to a 29-year-old man using a parang measuring about 70 centimetres, described in court documents as a weapon capable of causing death if used offensively.
The alleged incident took place at Block C of the Ampang Jajar flats near Butterworth at about 4am on 25 May.
Deputy public prosecutor Lim Zhan Yi led the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.
Tanabalan pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him. In mitigation for bail, he told the court that he worked as a labourer while his wife, a factory worker, supports their three school-going children.
The court allowed bail at RM10,000 and set 2 July for mention, including the submission of medical reports and the appointment of counsel.
Previous reports indicated that the victim suffered severe injuries, including fractures to both arms, a right leg injury and a skull crack, and is feared to be permanently disabled. Authorities said the attack is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the two men. - June 4, 2026
