A 25-YEAR-OLD motorcyclist was killed after crashing into the rear of a four-wheel-drive vehicle along Jalan Papar–Kota Kinabalu near Kampung Meruntum, Putatan, in an incident that ended with the abandoned vehicle later being found burned a short distance away.

Penampang Deputy Police Chief DSP Erwansyah Abdul Basir said the accident occurred at about 11.10pm on Tuesday.

He said the impact of the collision caused the motorcyclist to be thrown into the rightmost lane of the road, where he was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

“The victim’s body was sent for post-mortem,” Daily Express quoted him saying.

Police confirmed that the driver and a passenger of the 4WD were not injured in the incident.

Erwansyah said that after the crash, the driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle about 1.5 kilometres away, before it was later set on fire by unknown individuals.

Authorities are now investigating both the fatal collision and the subsequent burning of the vehicle.

Police have urged witnesses to come forward to assist investigations by contacting investigating officer Inspector Saparia Ladoni at 019-8095133.

DSP Erwansyah also reminded members of the public not to circulate images from the accident scene, out of respect for the victim’s family. - June 4, 2026
