POLICE have arrested a 23-year-old woman following the discovery of a headless baby’s body in a drain at a residential area in Padang Setengge in Kuala Berang, Hulu Terengganu with the case identified within 24 hours.

Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the woman was arrested at her home at 3.30pm yesterday to assist investigations under Section 318 of the Penal Code.

He said the arrest enabled police to establish the birth and the suspect’s alleged involvement in the case.

A post-mortem conducted by a pathologist at the forensic department of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital this morning found that the baby was full-term and had been dead for more than 24 hours before the body was examined at 9am on Saturday.

“However, it could not be determined whether the baby was born alive or dead, nor could the cause of death be established. The baby’s sex also could not be determined,” Sharudin said in a statement today.

It was earlier reported that a woman discovered the baby’s body, which was missing several body parts, in a drain behind her house while washing clothes at the Padang Setengge residential area in Kuala Berang. - October 18, 2026
