A ROUTINE enforcement operation by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Kedah led to the arrest of a foreign motorcyclist who attempted to evade inspection, only for officers to discover dozens of unresolved traffic offences linked to the rider.

The incident occurred at approximately 6.30pm on Friday in Guar Kepayang, where enforcement personnel were conducting a road operation targeting traffic violations and compliance with road regulations.

According to authorities, the man, identified as a member of the Rohingya community, allegedly abandoned his motorcycle and fled after becoming aware of the presence of JPJ officers.

In an effort to avoid inspection, he reportedly ran through nearby paddy fields, hoping to escape enforcement action.

However, the attempt was short-lived as enforcement officers pursued and successfully detained him before he could evade capture.

Subsequent checks revealed that the motorcyclist had amassed 34 active traffic summonses that remained unpaid.

Investigators also found that he did not possess a valid driving licence, adding to the list of offences detected during the operation.

Following the discovery of the violations, the motorcycle was seized by JPJ for further enforcement action.

Kedah JPJ director Stien Van Lutam said the department would continue taking firm action against foreign nationals who fail to comply with Malaysia's road laws and regulations.

He stressed that holders of cards issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are equally required to respect and abide by the country's traffic laws while using public roads.

The latest case forms part of ongoing efforts by JPJ to strengthen compliance, improve road safety and ensure that all motorists, regardless of nationality or immigration status, adhere to the legal requirements governing road use in Malaysia. - June 13, 2026
