FORMER Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, celebrates his 101st birthday today.

He was born on July 10, 1925, in Kampung Seberang Perak, Alor Setar, Kedah, while his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, will celebrate her 100th birthday on July 12.

Dr Mahathir became the fourth Prime Minister on 16 July 1981, which is the longest time to govern the country which was for 22 years.

Among the mega projects developed during his administration are the Penang Bridge, Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Multimedia Highway Corridor (MSC), Putrajaya Administrative Center and Sepang International Circuit.

Launched in 1991, Mahathir's Vision 2020 was his most ambitious national agenda.

In 2018, after his political coalition won the 14th general election (GE14), Dr Mahathir was again appointed as the seventh Prime Minister.

Although he has now retired from the world of politics, the statesman is still active in providing views and criticism, whether through writings or talk shows. – July 10, 2026
