THE number of flood evacuees in Melaka has risen to 989 people as heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of Alor Gajah and Melaka Tengah, forcing hundreds of residents to seek shelter at temporary relief centres.

Melaka Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Kamarulsyah Muslim said the latest figure, recorded at 8am on Sunday, increased from 970 victims reported the previous night following a rise in affected residents.

In Alor Gajah, 20 victims from areas including Taman Masjid Tanah Ria, Jalan Bandar Baru Masjid Tanah, Kampung Pulau Semut and Kampung Seri Jeram were evacuated to two temporary relief centres at PERKIM Masjid Tanah and Balai Raya Kampung Seri Jeram.

Melaka Tengah recorded the highest number of evacuees, with 969 people from 304 families housed at four relief centres.

The largest number of victims were placed at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tanjung Minyak 2, which accommodated 716 people from 227 families, followed by SK Taman Bukit Rambai with 186 victims, JAPERUN Pantai Kundor with 43 victims and SJKC Bertam Ulu with 24 victims.

Kamarulsyah said 34 areas had been affected by flooding, with 30 located in Melaka Tengah, including Kampung Batu Berendam, Taman Rambai Jaya, Taman Rambai Utama, Kampung Tanjung Minyak, Kampung Bertam Ulu, Kampung Batu Hampar and Rambai Indah.

APM, together with relevant agencies, continues to monitor the situation and remains prepared to assist affected residents, including carrying out further evacuation operations if required. - July 12, 2026
