SEVERE weather across the Klang Valley has claimed one life after a tree crashed on two vehicles along Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur, while heavy rain also triggered flash floods across several areas of neighbouring Petaling Jaya.
The fatal incident occurred near the Singapore High Commission past night, when a large tree fell on a Honda Accord and a Perodua Bezza carrying a total of eight people.
Dang Wangi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said police received a report on the incident at about 10.20pm.
Initial investigations found that the Honda Accord, driven by a 43-year-old man, sustained extensive damage after being crushed by the fallen tree.
"The victim was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) at 4am on Sunday due to injuries sustained in the incident," he said in a statement.
The victim had earlier been rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped inside the wreckage before being taken to hospital in critical condition.
The second vehicle, a Perodua Bezza, was carrying seven members of the same family comprising five adults, a two-year-old child and a two-month-old infant.
"All of them did not suffer any external injuries. However, they remain at HKL for further medical examinations, including X-rays, to determine whether they sustained any internal injuries," Sazalee said.
He added that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) completed tree-cutting and clearance works at about midnight, while both damaged vehicles were towed away to restore the flow of traffic along Jalan Tun Razak.
The fatality came as heavy rain battered the Klang Valley throughout Saturday, causing flash floods in several parts of Petaling Jaya, with Medan Selera 223 in Section 51A among the worst-affected locations.
The latest flooding marked the third time in less than three months that the popular food court had been inundated, disrupting businesses and once again highlighting persistent drainage challenges in the area.
The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received an emergency call regarding the flooding at 4.35pm before dispatching firefighters from the Petaling Jaya Fire and Rescue Station.
Assistant Director of Operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar said firefighters arrived approximately 20 minutes later and found floodwaters reaching an estimated depth of two metres.
"A team of officers and personnel from the Petaling Jaya Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the location about 20 minutes after the report was received and found floodwaters approximately two metres deep. However, the incident did not require the evacuation of affected residents," he said.
A total of 12 firefighters, supported by a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, were deployed to the scene.
JBPM said the water level had begun to recede by the time emergency personnel arrived, with no casualties or evacuations reported.
As of 5pm on Saturday, the department had also received four emergency calls involving fallen trees at several locations across Selangor, none of which resulted in injuries.
The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) later confirmed that floodwaters had largely subsided across the affected areas.
Among the locations affected were the BHP petrol station along Jalan 222, Jalan 14/1, the FAS Tunnel, Kampung Chempaka, Medan Selera 223, Jalan Seroja in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara and Lorong 16/7A.
MBPJ said access at the BHP petrol station had been restored after floodwaters receded.
"At the FAS Tunnel, floodwaters have also subsided, although two vehicles were affected and are currently being removed.
"Meanwhile, in Kampung Chempaka, Jalan Seroja Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara and Lorong 16/7A, the floodwaters have receded and no residents were evacuated, with property owners carrying out cleaning works," the council said.
At Medan Selera 223, authorities assisted in removing stranded vehicles while clean-up operations were carried out, and an electricity team was dispatched to inspect the site.
MBPJ also reported rising water at a house at No. 14, Jalan 1A/71G (Jalan Carey), although the latest status had yet to be updated.
Separately, a fallen tree at Lorong 4/49E was successfully cleared by the authorities.
Videos shared on social media earlier showed muddy floodwaters sweeping through Medan Selera 223, reaching below waist level and disrupting traders and customers before conditions gradually improved later in the evening.
