KOTA KINABALU – Police are investigating a man who attempted to commit suicide and tried to set a hotel room on fire in Labuan.
Labuan acting police chief Mohd Ibrahim Bin Mohd Ghani said police headquarters received a report at 6.50am on the incident at the third floor of the hotel at the Lazenda Commercial Centre, Labuan.
The suspect, a 35-year-old Kedayan local man, had injured himself and had also set some equipment on fire in the room at around 4.30am this morning.
The suspect was rescued at the scene by the Fire and Rescue Department who found the room locked, but they managed to persuade him to open the door.
There were injuries on the left and right wrists of the suspect believed to be from glass bottle fragments. He was taken to Labuan Hospital by ambulance.
A police investigation found that the suspect was believed to be depressed as he had not been able to meet his mother who has been imprisoned in Peninsular Malaysia for a long time.
The suspect, who is currently being held at Labuan Hospital, is currently receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
The case is being investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide and Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosives with the intention of causing damage. – The Vibes, January 5, 2021
