SARAWAK'S continued transformation into one of Malaysia's leading economic and development success stories took centre stage as state and federal leaders called on the people to strengthen unity and work together in commemorating Sarawak Day on Wednesday.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said July 22 is far more than a public holiday, describing it as a historic occasion that reminds Sarawakians of the state's struggle, resilience and journey towards becoming an increasingly progressive and prosperous state.
He said Sarawak has continued to move forward through sustained economic growth and development initiatives that have delivered tangible benefits to the people.
Abang Johari also conveyed Sarawak Day greetings to all Sarawakians, whether they are living in rural areas, urban centres or overseas.
He expressed hope that Sarawak would continue to prosper in peace while remaining a source of pride for every Sarawakian.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said Sarawak Day symbolises the dignity, identity and enduring spirit of the people of the Land of the Hornbills in shaping the state's future.
"Alhamdulillah, on July 22, the people of Sarawak once again celebrate Sarawak Day — a historic moment that symbolises the dignity, identity and fighting spirit of the people of the Land of the Hornbills in determining the direction of the state that we cherish," he said.
Fadillah said this year's theme, "Sarawak Maju Makmur, Segulai Sejalai" (Prosperous and Progressive Sarawak, Together as One), reflects the belief that the state's continued progress can only be achieved through solidarity, cooperation and a shared commitment to development.
He said Sarawak Day commemorates not only the attainment of self-government in 1963 but also the unity, visionary leadership and determination of people from diverse ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds who have consistently placed the state's interests above their differences.
Fadillah added Sarawak has emerged as a leader in future-focused development under the leadership of Premier Abang Johari through initiatives in the hydrogen economy, renewable energy, digital transformation, modern infrastructure, education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), sustainable resource management and programmes that enhance public well-being.
He said the state's achievements are reflected not only in physical development but also in higher living standards, good governance, human capital development and greater opportunities for future generations.
"However great our achievements may be, Sarawak's true strength remains the unity of its people. The diversity of races, cultures, languages and religions is not an obstacle, but rather a strength that makes Sarawak one of the finest examples of harmony in a multicultural society.
"The spirit of 'Segulai Sejalai' (unity and togetherness) must continue to guide us all. Together, let us preserve harmony, safeguard stability, strengthen unity and continue the development agenda to ensure Sarawak's prosperity benefits every segment of society.
"Let us celebrate Sarawak Day with gratitude, love for our state and a renewed sense of responsibility to contribute to the progress of the Land of the Hornbills. Celebrate the history that shaped us, appreciate the achievements we have attained and renew our commitment to move forward together in building a Sarawak that is more advanced, more prosperous, more inclusive and more sustainable.
