A YOUNG girl with autism died after she was believed to have fallen from the 13th floor of Pangsapuri Ladang Tok Pelamin Kuala Terenggan today.
The child’s body was discovered at about 7am on the sixth-floor car park area of the apartment building.
The victim was understood to have been staying at the apartment with her family from Pasir Putih, Kelantan, who had rented a homestay unit there yesterday.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case comes amid renewed attention on investigations involving deaths following falls from high-rise buildings, including the recent death of an 18-year-old teenager at Komtar in George Town.
In the Komtar incident, the teenager was found dead on the sixth-floor podium roof of the 68-storey building after allegedly falling from an upper floor.
George Town district police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the victim, who was from the nearby Macallum area, was found fully clothed and had sustained severe head and bodily injuries consistent with a fall from height.
“The victim sustained severe head and bodily injuries consistent with the impact of a fall from a height,” he said.
Rozak said there was no indication of foul play and the case was classified as sudden death.
The Penang Fire and Rescue Department said firefighters received an emergency call at 4.17pm and arrived at the scene eight minutes later.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Jamil Abdullah said the victim was found on the podium roof wearing a wristband believed to have been used to access the Komtar Skywalk attraction.
"The victim was brought down using ropes and a stretcher as the roof was inaccessible by conventional means," he said.
"The retrieval was made more difficult as the roof surface was slippery after the rain, requiring firefighters to exercise extra caution throughout the operation."
The rescue operation involved seven firefighters from the Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Station.
