AN IMMIGRATION Department 'Black Maria' driver who was involved in an accident that claimed the lives of three children on Jalan Sultan Ismail yesterday pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court today to five charges against him.

The accused, Mohd. Akbar Zainol, 43, made the plea after all charges under the Road Transport Act 1987 were read out before Magistrate Aliaa Anwar.

Yesterday, it was reported that a family of three died after being hit by an Immigration truck that skidded off the road at the Maju Junction traffic lights, Jalan Sultan Ismail.

In the incident at about 1 am, the victims who died at the scene were a 53-year-old man and his two daughters aged 25 and 12 respectively.

A 55-year-old woman, who is also the victim's wife and mother, was injured and is currently being treated at the Red Zone of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).

Mohd Akbar was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 with causing the deaths of Shaik Mohd Firdaus Shaik Yahya, 53, and his two daughters, Siti Norshazlin, 25, and Siti Darwisyah Auni, 12.

He was also charged under Section 43(1) of the same Act with driving without due care and attention, resulting in injuries to pedestrian Nor Hayati Rozali.

The fifth charge, under Section 79(2) of the Act, alleged that he failed to obey a red traffic light at the Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection.

The three charges under Section 41(1) carry a jail term of between five and 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000 upon conviction.

The fourth charge carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000, or imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both, while the fifth carries a fine of between RM300 and RM2,000.

The court then allowed the accused to be bailed at RM60,000 for all five charges and set October 27 for mention of the case. - August 20, 2026
