A FORMER chief executive of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has been remanded for seven days as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) intensifies its investigation into alleged wrongdoing uncovered in the pilgrimage fund’s Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report.
Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah issued the remand order at the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court today after allowing an application by MACC.
The former CEO arrived at the court at 9.38am in a black sports utility vehicle.
He appeared calm, wearing an orange shirt bearing the words ‘Lokap SPRM’ and handcuffed as he was escorted into the courtroom.
The remand is believed to be linked to MACC’s investigation into the RCI findings on TH’s management and operations between 2014 and 2020.
The 211-page RCI report was made public on July 29, prompting MACC to launch a broader probe into possible elements of corruption, misappropriation, document forgery, abuse of power and money laundering.
Following the report’s release, MACC formed a special investigation team to scrutinise the findings, including TH’s investments, agreement documentation, contracts, meeting minutes and other records relating to investment decisions.
The agency has previously said it had opened 14 investigation papers, inspected and searched 28 premises and recorded statements from 115 witnesses as part of the probe.
Seven individuals have also been detained to assist the investigation, including four former senior TH management officials.
The RCI was established to examine TH’s management and operations from 2014 to 2020 amid concerns over an estimated RM11 billion asset-liability gap and compliance with legislation governing the institution.
Among those named in the RCI report were former ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom and Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa, as well as former TH chairmen Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim and Tan Sri Md Nor Md Yusof.
Former TH chief executives Tan Sri Ismee Ismail and Datuk Seri Johan Abdullah were also mentioned in the report.
The RCI identified 14 TH investments requiring further scrutiny through forensic audits, prompting intensified examination of the fund’s investment decisions and governance.
MACC is also considering engaging overseas forensic experts to assist in examining documents and agreements relevant to the investigation.
The latest remand represents a further escalation of the anti-graft agency’s probe into potential wrongdoing arising from the RCI’s findings. - August 21, 2026
