PRIME MINISTER and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he has not been informed of any invitation for former party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali to return to PKR, despite Azmin’s claim that former members had been invited back.
Anwar gave the brief response when approached by reporters after officiating the National Innovation and Commercialisation Expo (NICE) 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
“Has anyone invited him? Was there an invitation? I was not informed,” he said.
His remarks came two days after Azmin, who is now secretary-general of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), reportedly said he would never return to PKR despite claims that former members had been invited to rejoin the party.
Azmin was a key PKR leader before his departure from the party during the political crisis of 2020, which culminated in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration.
The question of former PKR members returning to the party has gained attention as the party looks to consolidate its political strength ahead of the next general election.
Former Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar and former Nibong Tebal MP Datuk Mansor Othman have reportedly been tipped to return to PKR.
Former PKR vice-president Datuk Dr Xavier Jayakumar has also confirmed his return to the party.
However, Azmin has rejected the prospect of returning, saying he would not rejoin PKR despite the reported invitations extended to former members.
Anwar’s response, meanwhile, indicates that he has not been briefed on any move to bring Azmin back into the party, leaving the reported invitation unclear.
The development comes as PKR navigates the political legacy of the 2020 crisis, which saw a major split within the party and the departure of several senior figures who subsequently joined rival political groupings. - August 27, 2026
