A DRIVER allegedly failed to notice two cyclists ahead of him before crashing into them from behind, killing both men on the Lebuh Raya Rakyat, in Kota Bharu on Friday.
The two victims, Zamrie Rismawadi Mahmet, 49, and his friend, Nik Zaki Yamani Nik Abdul Aziz, 49, died at the scene after suffering severe head and bodily injuries in the crash at Kilometer 16.5 at about 9am.
Kota Bharu Deputy District Police Chief Superintendent Wan Ruzailan Wan Mat Rusoff said preliminary investigations found that the cyclists were riding along the left lane from Kota Bharu towards Ketereh when they were struck by a Perodua Kelisa travelling in the same direction.
“When he arrived at the scene, the car driver allegedly did not see or notice the two cyclists. The distance was too close, causing the driver to be unable to avoid them before crashing into the rear of both victims’ bicycles,” he said today.
Wan Ruzailan said both cyclists suffered serious injuries to their heads and bodies and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their bodies were taken to Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) for post-mortem examinations.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The victims were reportedly undergoing cycling training in preparation for a convoy to Thailand next week.
Zamrie’s elder brother, Zamri Risman, 52, said his younger brother had been training for the trip ahead of the planned cycling convoy. - September 5, 2026
