THE Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) plans to revive its proposal for a dedicated ministry to strengthen the force’s services, improve the welfare of its personnel and modernise its logistical assets.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the proposal was warranted given PDRM’s size, with more than 137,000 police officers, personnel and civil servants — a workforce comparable to that of the Defence Ministry (MINDEF).
“We see PDRM as a large agency with about 137,000 officers, personnel and civil servants.
“It is time to open up space and opportunity for PDRM to stand as a ministry, just as we compare it with the Defence Ministry, which also has a comparable strength and membership.
“So, by establishing a Ministry of Security, I believe it would be the starting point for us to provide even better services,” he said when met at Bukit Aman recently.
Mohd Khalid said a separate ministry could allow long-standing issues affecting police personnel, particularly facilities, logistics, housing and welfare, to be addressed more effectively and with greater focus.
“This issue was raised by former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain last year.
“Perhaps this is also an opportunity for PDRM to revive the issue so that matters concerning logistics, welfare and other areas can be addressed better and more comprehensively in the future,” he said.
Asked whether the proposal had been discussed with the Home Ministry, Mohd Khalid confirmed that preliminary discussions had taken place and said he was committed to putting the proposal forward again to the Government.
“Last year, we discussed it and brought it to the ministry (Home Ministry), and perhaps there is now room and opportunity for me to resubmit this proposal for consideration.
“So far, the feedback has been positive, but we need permission or approval from the Government because I believe a matter such as this requires more thorough consideration for it to be implemented properly,” he said.
