PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has backed Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate peace talks between the United States and Iran, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy must remain central to efforts to ease regional tensions.
Anwar said he conveyed his appreciation for Pakistan’s role during a telephone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today, during which they also exchanged views on regional developments and Malaysia-Pakistan relations.
“I expressed my appreciation for Pakistan’s role in facilitating peace talks between the United States and Iran, and stressed that space for dialogue and diplomacy must continue to be strengthened to ease tensions and pave the way for lasting peace,” he said in a social media post.
The two leaders also discussed the planned visit by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to Malaysia, which has been postponed several times.
Anwar said he welcomed Munir’s visit at any convenient time without the need to be bound by formal protocol arrangements.
“We also discussed meat exports, which will continue to be followed up by teams from both countries to open up opportunities for broader cooperation,” he said.
Anwar said the telephone conversation also provided an opportunity for Sharif to convey his condolences over the death of his elder brother, Idrus Ibrahim.
He added that Sharif also conveyed his condolences to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad following the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali.
Anwar said Malaysia-Pakistan friendship should continue to be translated into efforts that deliver tangible benefits to the people of both countries. - October 1, 2026
