ONE of 55 Malaysians reported missing in Nepal following devastating floods and landslides has been found safe and returned home after 37 days, in the first breakthrough in efforts to trace those unaccounted for.

The Malaysian Chinese man, who had been travelling alone, reported to the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu on Oct 1, according to Malaysia Solidarity: Families in Hope (MASFIH) spokesman Dr Manivannan Rethinam.

He arrived safely in Malaysia this morning and was reunited with his family.

The man had been uncontactable since the disaster disrupted travel and communications in several parts of Nepal, leaving his family uncertain of his whereabouts.

His return follows weeks of efforts to establish the whereabouts of Malaysians reported missing after the floods and landslides.

Manivannan said the man had spent 37 days in uncertainty before making contact with the Malaysian diplomatic mission in Kathmandu.

The development provides the first confirmed indication that at least one person on the list of 55 missing Malaysians has been located and safely returned to the country. - October 2, 2026
