THE Election Commission (EC) has confirmed that no by-election will be held for the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat following the resignation of its incumbent, Lee Chean Chung, last Friday.

EC Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun stated that the commission received notification from the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tan Sri Johari Abdul—via a letter dated October 2, 2026—regarding the status of the unexpected vacancy of the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat.

“Based on Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has informed the Election Commission (EC) that there is no need to fill the casual vacancy.

“Accordingly, no by-election will be held for the P105 Petaling Jaya parliamentary constituency,” he said in a statement on Monday.

This decision makes Petaling Jaya the fourth parliamentary seat in the current term to become vacant without a subsequent by-election, following Pandan, Setiawangsa, and Subang.

Previously, on May 20, the EC confirmed that there would be no by-elections for the Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats after their respective incumbents, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, vacated their seats.

Last August, the EC also confirmed there would be no by-election for the Subang parliamentary seat following the resignation of its incumbent, Wong Chen.

Lee, 45, resigned from his position as the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya following the suspension of his membership in Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) for three years, a decision he received on September 30, 2026.

He had previously alleged that access to the Petaling Jaya constituency's allocations had been blocked and that its management had been taken over through a process alleged to lack transparency. – October 5, 2026
