TWO women were killed when the car they were travelling in collided head-on with a trailer before the heavy vehicle struck three other vehicles at Kampung Selamat, Setiu, yesterday afternoon.

Setiu district police chief Superintendent Zahril Asri Mohd Zain said preliminary investigations indicated that the Proton Waja was travelling from Kota Bharu towards Kuala Terengganu when its driver is believed to have lost control and entered the opposite lane.

The car then collided with an oncoming Mercedes-Benz trailer at kilometre 48 of the Kuala Terengganu-Kota Bharu road.

“The impact caused the trailer to lose control and sideswipe a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), a Perodua Aruz, a Perodua Myvi and a UDT lorry, all travelling from Kota Bharu towards Kuala Terengganu,” he said in a statement.

The victims were identified as the Proton Waja driver, Nur Fauziah Ismail, 38, a trader from Kampung Apek, and front-seat passenger Zawiah Halias, 41, a trader from Kampung Hulu Kekabu.

Both suffered severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were taken to Setiu Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Police received information about the crash at about 4pm, with the accident believed to have occurred at 3.45pm.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Zahril Asri urged witnesses to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Setiu district police headquarters to assist with the investigation. - October 11, 2026
