A FATHER and daughter were killed when a container fell onto their car as they travelled home along Jalan Sepanggar near Sabah Port in Kota Kinabalu yesterday evening.
Mohd Jadi Pelbi, 53, and his daughter, Norfaieza Mohd Jadi, 24, were trapped inside their Toyota Avanza after the incident at about 6.20pm and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The pair were reportedly returning to their home in Kuala Baru after Mohd Jadi had picked up Norfaieza, who worked in Manggatal.
Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station acting chief Mohd Hannis Mokthar said the department received an emergency call at 6.31pm and dispatched 26 personnel and rescue vehicles to the scene.
He said witness accounts indicated that a trailer lorry carrying a container from the roadside along Jalan Pelabuhan Sepanggar Bay had apparently lost its balance before overturning, causing the container to fall onto the passing car.
Firefighters arrived at 7.01pm and began rescue operations, but had to wait for the container to be lifted before they could reach the victims.
Two cranes arrived at 9.21pm to assist in lifting the container, allowing the car to be recovered.
Specialised equipment was then used to extricate the two victims, who were subsequently pronounced dead by Health Ministry medical personnel.
Their bodies were handed over to the police for further action, while the rescue operation ended at 10.30pm. - October 19, 2026
