THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating how an attack on a teacher at an international school in Sarawak was livestreamed on social media, amid allegations that the platform failed to prevent the broadcast.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said MCMC was conducting further investigations and would issue an official statement after examining the matter.

“We are aware that there have been several incidents in other countries in which social media platforms failed to prevent livestreams showing acts of violence.

“I will leave it to MCMC to conduct the investigation and issue a further statement,” he told his weekly press conference today.

Sarawak police had confirmed that a 16-year-old male student livestreamed the attack on a female teacher at the school.

The teacher reportedly sustained injuries to her hand in the incident, which occurred at about 8.03am last Wednesday.

The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which covers voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means, and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957. - October 23, 2026
