FOUR constituencies will become battlegrounds between Bersatu and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Nov 14 Melaka state election after the opposition party announced candidates for seats also being contested by PH.
The four seats are Ayer Keroh, Klebang, Gadek and Pengkalan Batu, setting up direct contests between the two political parties.
Bersatu secretary-general and election director Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the party was leaving it to voters to decide which candidates deserved to represent them, despite the overlapping contests.
He described the face-off as part of a healthy democratic process, saying voters should have the final say.
"We take the position that this competition is healthy competition in a democratic system.
"Ultimately, let the people decide who should represent them in those constituencies," he said after Bersatu's candidate announcement ceremony last night.
Azmin said Bersatu would campaign on policies centred on public welfare, economic growth and job creation rather than resorting to defamatory politics.
He said Melaka voters were mature enough to assess the candidates and make their own choices, recalling that they had previously demonstrated their willingness to change the state government.
"We hope that this time they will also be mature and fair in giving Bersatu the opportunity to represent them," he said.
The four-way political overlap comes despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's earlier remarks that a confidence and supply agreement (CSA) involving Bersatu and several opposition MPs provided a basis for political stability and smoother government administration.
Anwar had also said the agreement would facilitate the implementation of national development priorities, including Budget 2027. - October 30, 2026
