MIRI – Several Sarawak districts were hit by torrential rain this morning, causing floods in many localities.

The badly affected districts are Kuching, Serian, Mukah, Miri and Baram.

The state Fire and Rescue Department said residents in several housing areas in Kuching had to be evacuated before dawn following a sudden rise in floodwaters to about 1m.

“Families in Kg Tabuan Dayak, Taman Desa Wira and Kg Sinar Budi were evacuated to nearby community halls,” the department said in its latest media update.

The number of evacuees has yet to be determined.

The authorities are monitoring the situation in the other districts as the downpour continues.
