MIRI – The Red Crescent dialysis centre here must continue its daily operations despite a staffer testing positive for Covid-19, yesterday.

The centre provides life-saving treatment for more than 300 patients weekly, many of whom suffer chronic kidney failure.

Senior Miri Red Crescent leader Karambir Singh told The Vibes that the centre has ramped up safety measures and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for patients after one of its staff members was infected.

He said the infection likely came from a dialysis patient who came for treatment but was found positive with Covid-19 shortly after his session.

“The infected staffer has been sent to hospital for treatment while 11 others who are close contacts have been placed under quarantine and given the necessary tests.

“There are more than 300 people who depend on our dialysis services and for many of them it is a matter of survival.”

The centre is a non-profit organisation that helps those in need who cannot afford private services, which cost upwards of RM3,000 per month. – The Vibes, January 24, 2021
