MIRI – Some 130 workers managed to escape a huge fire that destroyed seven blocks of their living quarters at the Bormill Estate plantation near Kuching early today.

All the workers – locals and foreigners – escape the burning structures when the blaze began at 3.30am, said the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.

“At 3.30am, we received three emergency calls on the fire. Our Bomba stations rushed their teams to the site and all the seven blocks were already on fire.

“The wooden structures are used to house 130 local and foreign workers inside. All of them managed to escape.”

Firefighting efforts were, however, hampered by low water pressure.

The teams had to call for water tankers to help battle the blaze.

Authorities said the cause of the fire is being investigated. – The Vibes, January 27, 2021
