MIRI – Several elderly residents in the Serian-Tebedu districts in southern Sarawak have been evacuated today due to flash floods.

The Fire and Rescue Department said the residents were trapped by the fast-rising floodwaters.

Rescue units had to carry the elderly who were stuck at home after waters rose to about a metre high.

The department in its latest updates said Kg Tebakang in the interior of Tebedu district was badly hit this afternoon.

“Our rescue teams had to wade through swift floodwaters to rescue stranded villagers.”

An elderly resident in her 80s had to be carried by a fireman from her flooded house.

In central Sarawak, the Song and Kapit towns saw 85 villagers evacuated to community halls as of this afternoon.
