MIRI – Police have intensified raids in coronavirus-ravaged Sibu to clamp down on business operators and customers who breach movement control order (MCO) rules.

Raids were conducted today on coffee shops flouting the directive barring dine-in.

On-the-spot RM1,000 fines were issued not only to the operators, but also patrons.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting took to social media to laud police’s action.

“Police did the right thing by increasing raids and imposing strict punishment on those who continue to defy the SOPs.

“Sibu is under the MCO for more than two weeks already, and yet, daily infections and deaths are very high.

“Despite these worrying developments, it can be seen that there are many who still do not care.

“We in the council welcome stricter enforcement by police against those who are still defiant.”

He said there were 51 new Covid-19 cases in Sibu yesterday.

“This shows that the virus is all around us in the town. If we take off our mask, we can get infected already. That is how serious the situation is.”

The district is the worst hit by the coronavirus in Sarawak.
