KUALA LUMPUR – The founder of controversial dating app Sugarbook has been rearrested in connection with a rape case and for offering sex services.
According to Harian Metro, Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Fadzil Ahmad said this followed a police report from a student at a higher learning institute.
He said the case had taken place in Subang Jaya on February 19, 2019.
“Following this, the suspect was arrested to assist in investigations according to Section 376 of the Penal Code and Section 372 of the same code,” he said in a statement here today.
Fadzil said the state’s prosecution team had applied for a review of the Shah Alam magistrates’ court decision to reject the application for remand against the suspect.
He said the review will be heard by the Shah Alam High Court at 9am tomorrow.
The magistrates’ court had earlier today rejected the police’s request to remand the founder of Sugarbook to assist with investigations on the platform, which is alleged to have, among other services, provided an avenue to solicit sex in exchange for money.
Earlier, the lawyer for the suspect Foong Cheng Leong said high court deputy registrar Noorasyikin Sahat rejected the request for remand after his client promised to cooperate with police.
