MIRI – The second day of torrential rain in Sarawak today saw 858 people evacuated from their inundated houses.
State Disaster Management Committee and Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department data shows flood victims from dozens of villages in southern Sarawak have been evacuated.
The agencies reported floods in many housing and commercial areas in Kuching, Lundu and Samarahan.
“At least 858 people from 258 families have been evacuated. Twelve flood relief centres have been opened to give them shelter," said the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat today.
Floodwaters have reached about 1.5m in many housing areas, it added.
Meanwhile, Public Works Department teams are repairing a section of a major road link in Lundu that collapsed yesterday.
The collapse had caused thousands to be cut off from the town.
The worst-hit areas yesterday were Lundu, Samarahan, Kuching, Batu Kawa, Petra Jaya, Matang, Siburan and Serian.
The Taman Muara Tuang housing area in the Samarahan district is among those badly hit.
Aside from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department team, members of the Civil Defence Unit and Rela are involved in the evacuation of flood victims.
