KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu has been named the front runner to helm Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd effective next month, The Malaysian Reserve (TMR) said, citing three industry sources.

Faizal, who is also Tambun MP and former Perak menteri besar, is expected to succeed Datuk Rameli Musa, whose three-year contract will expire at the end of this month.

Rameli, who is also the executive vice-chairman and non-independent executive director of Ingress Corp Bhd, was appointed KTMB chairman in February 2019.

“The contract is out for Faizal to replace Rameli effective March 1,” said an industry source, according to TMR.

The business publication also quoted another source as saying that it was not known whether Faizal had accepted the offer.

Faizal, however, said he is unaware of the matter.

Faizal resigned as Perak menteri besar last December after losing a motion of confidence at the state legislative assembly.

KTMB is a wholly owned company of the Minister of Finance Inc – a subsidiary of the Finance Ministry – with its train and rail operation regulated by the Transport Ministry.

According to TMR, both the Transport Ministry and KTMB declined to comment. The Finance Ministry also said it cannot comment on speculation. – The Vibes, February 22, 2021
