MIRI – Sarawak’s borders have been reopened to foreign workers since Monday, despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said the decision was made after taking into consideration many companies’ demands.

“We have received applications from many companies in Sarawak for foreign workers to be allowed in.

“There are applications for 27,000 foreign workers from sectors such as plantation, construction, heavy industries, services and F&B.

“But, the foreign workers must adhere to the SOPs.”

Meanwhile, the state recorded another coronavirus-related death at Sibu Hospital, involving an 85-year-old man, and 139 fresh infections.

Uggah said Sibu district has 39 new cases, followed by Kuching (29), Bintulu (17), Betong (13), Miri (6) and other districts (fewer than 5).
