MIRI – A new spate of Covid-19 infections has hit the pupils, teachers, and families of primary and secondary schools here, intensifying alarm over the spread of the coronavirus in Sarawak’s northern region.
This has caused the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (DMC) today to once again postpone the reopening of schools in the district in view of the deteriorating situation.
“The reopening of schools in Miri district this coming Monday will be postponed until April 5,” the committee said in its latest updates to schools.
“This decision was made in consultation with the Health Department and Education Department due to the increase in Covid-19 infections among the communities here.”
The DMC said Miri saw 209 new Covid-19 infections over the past five days. Out of these, 18 cases involved primary and secondary students as well as their teachers, and another 55 positive cases were subsequently found among their close contacts and families.
The division said it has informed the state DMC headquarters in Kuching about this latest situation in Miri.
Sarawak yesterday overtook Selangor as the state with the highest number of daily Covid-19 cases, with a total of 407 new infections.
