MIRI – Flash floods inundated two districts and a subdistrict in central Sarawak in the early hours today, affecting several longhouses and at least one primary school.

Districts Betong and Selangau, and subdistrict Ulu Skrang, were badly hit, said reports to the state Fire and Rescue Department in Kuching.

Firefighters in Ulu Skrang reported an emergency alert was received from staff of SK Nanga Tebat when the teachers’ quarters were inundated about 6am.

“Among those rescued was a pregnant woman and her 3-year-old son,” read the report.

The affected teachers and children were taken to higher ground from their quarters, where floodwaters had reached about 0.5m high.

In Selangau, longhouse Rumah Gerinsa remains flooded since 11pm last night.

Some 10 people have been evacuated by rescue personnel and taken to nearby longhouses.

In Betong, the Rumah Ijok longhouse was also flooded, with 13 families evacuated.

No injuries or fatalities were reported in all three areas. – The Vibes, March 23, 2021
