MIRI – Sarawak Pakatan Harapan (PH) today formed two new committees to tackle two current issues affecting the people: land reform, and public services bureaus.

The state coalition also appointed Miri MP Michael Teo Yu Keng of PKR as deputy chairman 1 to replace Julau MP Larry Sng Wei Shien, who is now a government-friendly independent after quitting the party last month.

State PH publicity secretary Abang Zulkifli Abang Engkeh today said the setting up of the new bureaus is to look into native land laws and public amenities.

“We are enhancing our outreach towards the rakyat during this run-up to the 12th state elections,” he said in a statement.

“We want to provide comprehensive coverage towards looking into every aspect of community needs.”

Sarawak PH also said that it has reached a deal for seat distribution for the looming state polls, prioritising unity among the component parties.

The three parties confirmed their seat allocations for the 82 constituencies, with PKR contesting in 47 seats, DAP with 26, and Amanah with 9.

The seats for PKR are Opar; Tanjung Datu; Pantai Damai; Tupong; Satok; Batu Lintang; Asajaya; Serembu; Tarat; Tebedu; Sadong Jaya; Simunjan; Lingga; Beting Maro; Balai Ringin; Bukit Begunan; Engkilili; Batang Ai; Saribas; Layar; Bukit Saban; Kalaka; Krian; Daro; Pakan; Meluan; Ngemah; Machan; Nangka; Dalat; Tellian; Balingian; Tamin; Kakus; Katibas; Belaga; Murum; Jepak; Bekenu; Lambir; Marudi; Telang Usan; Mulu; Bukit Kota; Batu Danau; Ba’kelalan; and Bukit Sari.

The 26 seats for DAP are Tasik Biru; Padungan; Pending; Kota Sentosa; Batu Kitang; Batu Kawah; Stakan; Mambong; Kedup, Bukit Semuja; Simanggang; Repok; Meradong; Bukit Assek; Dudong; Bawang Assan; Pelawan; Pelagus; Bukit Goram; Baleh; Tanjong Batu; Kemena; Samalaju; Piasau; Pujut; and Senadin.

The seats for Parti Amanah are Demak Laut; Samariang; Muara Tuang; Gedong; Sebuyau; Kabong; Kuala Rajang; Semop; and Jemoreng.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) ruling state government – which is made up of Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) – controls 68 of the state’s 82 seats.

The current term of the assembly expires on June 8 if the GPS does not hold the state polls before that.

The Election Commission will have 60 days from June 8 to fix nomination and polling dates.

Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg, who is PBB president and GPS chairman, had said the ruling coalition wanted to hold the polls before the end of last year.

The Covid-19 situation did not allow that to take place as planned, he had said in Miri in early December. – The Vibes, March 24, 2021
